What is a gearbox?
Even if you’re not mechanically inclined, you probably know the basics of what a gearbox does. It changes the torque (accelerating power) and speed of your engine, allowing you to do things like get the car moving, suddenly increase speed, or drive up a hill. It also determines the direction in which your wheels travel (forward or reverse).
The gearbox itself is exactly what the name implies – a box with gears inside. Its job is to transfer the power from the motor to the wheels of your car. A gearbox’s housing is normally made from aluminium or iron and alongside the gears, it also contains synchronising sleeves and a shifting mechanism.

The gears
Each gear is a different size, and the larger the gear, the greater the torque output. For example, first gear is the largest and gives the greatest amount of torque, which is why you use it to get the vehicle in motion and drive up steep hills. The higher gears get progressively smaller, supplying different combinations of speed and pulling capability.
A gearbox can’t work without power, which comes from the car’s engine via a fast-spinning crankshaft – too fast for the wheels to handle. The gears intercept that spinning motion, via sets of small and large cogs, and convert it into the right amount of power for the driving conditions. That power then travels to the axels and wheels via the driveshaft.
