Keep an eye out for these four issues in your DSG 7 dry clutch system transmission
If you drive an older Audi, VW, Skoda or Seat vehicle with an engine capacity under 2000cc, you likely have a gearbox that uses a DSG 7 dry clutch system. Introduced in the late 2000s, the 7-speed DSG was popular for being an automatic transmission with the performance of a manual. However, these gearboxes can suffer from a range of common problems – luckily, all quite repairable. Here’s a list of the failures you are most likely to encounter in your DSG 7 dry clutch system.

Hydraulic leaks
A common issue within the DCT mechatronic unit, leaks in the hydraulics will require a rebuild or replacement. If this problem occurs, you are likely to experience incorrect or rough gear changes or possibly a total loss of drive. Failure to fix this could result in damage to your car’s gears and shorten the life of your transmission.
Faulty reverse selector
A somewhat inevitable issue in units built before 2018, this problem prevents you from putting the vehicle into reverse, or sixth gear. Warning signs include a grinding noise when selecting reverse and a flashing engine light. The solution is to strip the transmission down and replace the affected components.
Worn clutch pack
As with most clutches, the moving parts inside the DSG 7-speed gearbox are subject to wear and tear from friction. If you experience juddering when changing gears or accelerating from a complete stop, over-revving during gear shifts, or a loud bang followed by the engine stalling, clutch wear is the likely culprit. Repairing the problem requires the installation of a new clutch.
Bearing failure
This issue is much less common than those listed above but can pop up occasionally. If you can hear a loud, constant whine when you are driving, then you probably have wear in your differential bearings. If the noise is only present in certain gears or while decelerating, then the problem may be limited to the bearings in individual shafts. A fix will involve stripping down the transmission and replacing the worn bearings.
